Course Information

The Diploma in Advanced Psychotherapeutic Practice is a one year course for qualified counsellors to build on their core training and deepen their practice in a number of areas including:

  • working with complex client presentations
  • working at depth in the therapeutic relationship
  • developing skills in appropriate client assessment and working ethically and safely with risk
  • heuristic research in counselling

Pending CPCAB approval, this will be a level 7 qualification to meet the training competencies aligned with SCoPEd column C.  Successful completion of the course means that students will be equipped for working confidently in private practice or as a senior counsellor in a counselling agency.

What the course involves

  • Attending the training session each fortnight
  • Attending tutorials with a personal tutor
  • Reading books from the required and recommended reading lists
  • Completing a substantial portfolio of written work including written assignments and a clinical case study
  • Group and peer supervision
  • Groupwork, presentations and reflective exercises
  • Completion of a short observational placement in a mental health setting (1-2 days)
  • Clinical assessment experience (4-6 hrs)
  • Completion of a minimum of 50 hrs of supervised clinical practice 
  • Completion of a minimum of 35 hours of personal counselling/psychotherapy
  • Being assessed as proficient

Entry Requirements

This course is for qualified counsellors who are looking to deepen their clinical skills and knowledge. Requirements include:

  • Prior completion of a recognised Level 4 Counselling Diploma course or higher - with a min 420 guided learning hours (GLH)
  • Currently be in clinical practice
  • Member of a professional body
  • Full completion of the course application form including the pre-course essay 
  • Proven ability to produce written work to meet academic requirements of this qualifcation level
  • Robustly developed emotional resources and resilience
  • Capacity and desire to proactively embrace and engage in a deep level of self-awareness and personal development
  • Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend a pre course interview

 

Dates

The course is delivered on Fridays 9am to 4pm fortnightly during term time

Dates – 25th September 2026 – 23rd July 2027 

There will also be a requirement to attend 2x Willows Workshops and 1x external CPD workshop (the cost of these are not included in the course fees)
