September Changes

Willows Counselling Service - September Changes

September - a time of change

Throughout the year, September holds a particular significance around change and transition.  The end of Summer moving towards Autumn and Winter, shorter days and longer nights.  We see the change in nature and our gardens, summer blooms fade and final fruits are harvested. Autumn starts to change the colours and shapes of trees and plants in preparation for Winter.

“That old September feeling, left over from school days, of summer passing, vacation nearly done, obligations gathering, books and football in the air…Another fall, another turned page: there was something of jubilee in that annual autumnal beginning, as if last year’s mistakes had been wiped clean by summer.” – Wallace Stegner

The impact

The beginning of a new academic year brings starts, ends and transitions, and individuals and families bear the effects of these changing dynamics.
From children first starting school, changing school years, transition from primary to secondary school, secondary to 6th form or college, starting University or moving into work, each change brings its particular challenges, both external and internal.  For some, these changes may be longed for and provide relief and satisfaction but for others, the losses which change can feel painful and difficult.

Change is a constant in life, yet navigating through its stages can be a challenging journey.

What's next?

These changes, although inevitable, can take time and thought to adapt to.  Endings, beginnings and changes to family dynamics can be felt in a multitude of ways.  It is usual for us all to experience the effects and difficulties which ease over time.

However you or anyone in your family are struggling with these or any other issues, Willows is here to support you.
